Cedar is and was the original building material for houses and other exterior purposes and remains the material of choice because of its natural beauty, environmental advantages, durability, and versatility. For siding, decking, interior structures and any kind of exterior edifice, cedar is the only "green" choice that will last ages and remain as beautiful as the day it was sawn. Take the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association's Cedar Challenge to see why cedar tops the charts as a quality wood.
Our Cedar

At Western Wood Products, we get our cedar from British Columbia, where 99.9% of the world's Western Red cedar grows. Our remote location makes us the only American cedar mill outside of Washington state, and we realize the opportunity and responsibility we have to provide quality cedar products nation-wide. Unlike other cedar distributors, we order raw cedar product direct from cedar lumber mills and re-manufacture the timbers into siding, decking, and boards in our own old-time saw mill and planer mill. Our cedar arrives to us via train cars directly from British Columbia so that we can maintain and guarantee the highest quality standards of re-manufactured cedar products.
One thing that distinguishes us from our competition is that we grade our own cedar. Where our competition receives already manufactured cedar product and cannot guarantee the grade they receive, Western Wood Products guarantees a trustworthy and strong grade of cedar. If we receive timbers with unacceptably large or frequent knots, we will dispose of them rather than sell subpar product. Knots in any of our products are smaller, tighter, and will not fall out.

Our most popular cedar siding product is the 5/8" x 8" thick tip because we guarantee that the butt of the board truly is 5/8" where our competition's butt may vary from 1/2" to 11/16". We realize that a wider butt results in a wider tip, and the precise measurement of 5/8" ensures the beauty and workability of the board.
Our second most popular cedar siding product is our 11/16" x 8" dry thick tip, and to our knowledge, we are the only mill in the world that makes this product. The sizing of this board is such that the tip becomes 3/4" and will NOT crack. Our competition will sell a size of board with a thinner tip, more prone to crack, but we developed this pattern of board several years ago to ensure the product's durability.

Why Cedar?
Beauty and Versatility
Western red cedar's texture and deep color represent a natural beauty that is unique to cedar as a wood. Vinyl and composite siding manufacturers texture their products to make them have the appearance of cedar. Unfinished cedar has richly textured grain with colours ranging from mellow ambers, reddish cinnamons and rich sienna browns. Its warm coloring is complimented by a uniform, fine-grained texture with a satin luster. Because cedar is virtually pitch and resin free, the wood easily accepts a range of finishes, from fine oils and stains, to solid coatings and paint.

Natural Durability and Strength
Western Red Cedar is one of the few wood species that is naturally at home in the outdoors. Properly finished, Western Red Cedar will last for decades, even in harsh environments. Its natural resistance to moisture, decay and insect damage make it the ideal choice for a surface that is exposed to sun, rain, heat and cold all year round. Natural resistance to moisture, decay and insect damage has long made Western Red Cedar the premier choice for either interior or exterior home use. Cedar fibers in the heartwood contain natural preservatives that are toxic to decay-causing fungi. Western Red Cedar has twice the stability of most commonly available softwoods. The stability is a result of its low density and shrinkage factors. It lies flat, stays straight, and holds fastenings tightly.
